One of the most notable achievements of our time in the field of innovation development is associated with the idea of open source software (OSS). Changing paradigms of interaction between the participants of the creative process converts the revolutionary approach to science, education and work, creative solutions and self-expression, giving them the potential is not possible at the last stages of development. Large commercial companies, governments, including the Russian Federation, international organizations and thousands of individual researchers and developers have joined the international initiative of OSS. At the same time, in Geology and Geophysics, there is still a certain stagnation that significantly constraining the potential of innovative development in this field of knowledge. In the article describes the processes associated with the use of OSS in the field of geological and geophysical studies, show the problems and ways to overcome them, highlight the major trends in OSS, the possibility and future prospects of OSS for solving applied geophysical problems.
